New York makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor has worked with celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington (squeal!), Miley Cyrus and Emmy Rossum. From his time as a volunteer with Dress For Success to creating makeup looks for guests attending red carpet events, he’s been driven by the belief that everyone deserves to look and feel fantastic!
With summer in full swing, I thought it would be fun to ask Andrew to share his favorite travel beauty products- and he graciously accepted the challenge. Here are 9 must-have items for your next get-away:
Cle De Peau
Travel makeup is all about versatility. While some makeup shades look good in daylight, others look best in candlelight. A luminizer will look great in any light. If you’ve got a range of activities planned, skip the blushes and bronzer, opt for the Luminizing Face Enhancer in Gold from Cle De Peau. The color is neutral so your skin glows perfectly wherever you are.
After eyes, lips are usually the first thing to get dried out on an airplane, and some lip glosses may exacerbate the problem. Instead, use the coconut oil based Lipshine from RMS Beauty. The sheer color makes it versatile, and you can reapply whenever your lips crave some smoothing hydration.
Dolce & Gabbana Chocolate Pencil
Smoky eyes are always the right answer. The decision to make, is “how smoky”? Whatever look you’re creating, line eyes with the Dolce & Gabbana pencil in Chocolate. The metallic bronze color flatters all eye colors and skin tones. To keep it subtle, set it with a bronze eyeshadow like Nars Fez, or MAC Chocolate Pigment. To intensify, layer a black shadow or Espresso like the one in Giorgio Armani’s shadow Quad #4 (Keep reading, see below)
Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Eyeshadow
When cutting down your makeup bag for travel purposes you shouldn’t have to choose between beautiful brows and bright eyes. One of my favorite products is the Eyes to Kill Shadow Quad from Giorgio Armani. The pigment is really high quality, but it also seems to be the neatest, and least likely to fall out below your eyes. More than just shadows, this palette of neutral taupe shadows are also great for defining brows. Brighten the inner corners with the white gold shade. Use the darkest shade to define eyes or intensify liner. Plus, those mid-shades can help reduce the look of jet lag. Apply the soft taupes to crease and inner corner of the eyes to minimize puffiness without looking made up. Arrive for vacay looking like you already had one.
Covergirl Bombshell Mascara
Lashes can be dressed down or dressed up, and it’s all about layering mascaras. I always use two different mascaras on clients, but you can simplify and still have the pro-result using the double sided Bombshell Volume by LashBlast Mascara from Covergirl. The first side will lengthen and separate your lashes. The second side adds volume and drama. You can also use the first side by itself for a natural look, and the second side layered, later on, for some pre-dinner drama.
Dermalogica Skin Age Smart Skin Kit
I like “all-in-one products” for their convenience, but I still think your skin looks the best when you layer specialized products. To keep it simple though, consider getting a Dermalogica Skin Kit. Pre-selected travel sizes create a complete skincare system with minimal packaging. A few airlines don’t make you take out your liquids for security, so I just throw a brand new box of the Age Smart collection into my suit case, and open the kit when I arrive!
Sunscreen is one of the most important products to have when planning extended time outdoors. It also must be reapplied frequently. For those reasons, it’s important that you choose a formula that is as healthy as possible. Soleil Toujours is made with high level mineral sun protection, without the many harmful chemicals found in other sunscreens. Plus, with a soft scent, and a vegan friendly formula, why would you ever want to buy sunscreen at a gift shop?
Oribe Beautiful Color Travel Set
You don’t need to be a makeup artist or hairstylist to know that most hotel soaps, shampoos and conditioners are not prepared to treat your hair color with the respect it deserves. The Beautiful Color Travel Set from Oribe contains seven packets each, of color preserving shampoo and conditioner. The formula strengthens both chemically processed and color treated hair, and is even good for dry hair. Plus, the kit includes a single use hair masque. For a revitalizing bit of luxury, massage into damp hair, treat yourself to the mini bar, and rinse out.
Grooming For The Guys with Gillette
When guys travel, it’s a perfect opportunity to mix up your morning routine, and give your skin a break from the daily blade shaving. Growing out some facial stubble is the easiest way to look more rugged and feel a little more at ease. To keep the look masculine, but not messy, keep edges looking neat. The Gillette Pro Glide Styler has a special edging blade, than can be used along the cheeks to make a crisper line (which also makes 5 o’clock shadow look denser). Use the power trimmer on it’s own to keep stubble short, or with the fixed length guards to keep beards, mustaches, and sideburns neat if needed. Lastly, use the five blade power razor to shave your the neck (Try going only as high as your Adam’s apple). The best part about this routine, is that you don’t have to do it as often as clean shaves. Just “neaten up” every few days, and you may decide to keep on with it, when you head back to work.
